Building Houses (again) made from Structural Insulated Panels
After a recuperation period following the sale of our well loved straw bale home, we built our two new houses on adjacent lots. We moved from the south section of the RoseWind PUD to the north edge of the community. The plan was to build and live in the smaller one, complete the “main house”, then vacate the first to make it my art studio with a workroom for Michael.
We have two separate houses to allow a future sale of either one when the time was right. The first is a single story 800 sq.ft. home, the second is about 1400 sq. ft., with a second floor over the center section. Both were built on a pretty tight budget, so some of the finish is rustic/unfinished still!

We moved from the small studio house to the larger main house in 2010, while still working on it, of course. Do it yourself style home construction is never completed until the need to sell comes about.
In the studio house we were slowly removing the temporary kitchen and clearing it out to transform it into an art studio, work space, & storage.
In 2015 we replaced the large but uninsulated metal storage shed we bought with the lot, which was so handy for storage during construction. The new shed is deluxe insulated storage on a concrete foundation, designed to match the studio. So no more damp drippy storage. We also added a tiny wooden “outhouse” for MJ’s road cruising motor scooter & our bicycles!
As you may note from photos below, the finished house differs just a bit from the early concept sketch at right!
The Studio House was First:
The studio is compact for a residence. Initially it had one small bedroom, with the potential for a slightly larger second bedroom that served as storage and work space until we converted it in 2025. Two small usable but awkward lofts provide additional space.

The Main House
The main house is all windows, with winter solar gain, and both have very thick insulation. We added an excellent covered patio years in 2024; the uncovered the patio was often too hot or too wet!
